The story of my name

A smile, and a soul.

That is what I was named for. Two words, two languages, and one promise I try to keep in every exam room.

First name تبسم Tabassum “a smile” Urdu & Arabic

Not a laugh. A smile. The quiet, warm kind you give someone to say: you are safe here. I try to bring that into every exam room, especially when the news is hard.

Family name نفسی Nafsi “my soul, my self” Urdu & Arabic

From nafs: the breath, the self, the inner life. It is no accident that a lung doctor carries a name rooted in breath.

Why the Institute carries my name

When I built a program for women entering the next phase of their lives, I wanted its name to be a promise rather than a slogan. Nafsi means the whole self: body, breath and spirit. That is exactly what a woman's care should treat.

The logo tells the same story. A woman's profile rising from a pair of lungs, held inside a circle of gold. Breath at the center. The woman, whole.
